In the heart of Lebanon, where the sounds of civil unrest echo through the streets, a remarkable effort is unfolding—one that seeks to turn pain into beauty. Amidst the chaos of political turmoil, a refugee crisis, and the weight of daily survival, organizations like Horizons International strive to nourish both the spirit and the soul, reminding people of the beauty that God has woven into the fabric of their lives.
Pierre Houssney, a passionate voice from Horizons International, eloquently expressed the mission: “In the midst of the trauma, in the midst of the poverty, we’re trying to give opportunities for believers who have artistic gifts to have a prophetic voice through their art.” These words resonate in a community desperately seeking hope. Houssney believes that art—especially art created in the name of Christ—has the profound power to speak to people's hearts and create connections that transcend their current struggles.
The initiative has taken form through inviting fine art classes where creativity flourishes amidst adversity. With enrollment peaking at 35 students, aspiring artists in Lebanon are discovering that even in their darkest times, they can find solace and expression through painting and drawing. Recently, these students showcased their talent at an exhibition in Beirut aptly named “His Touch,” which highlighted the work of beginner artists alongside that of ten established Christian artists. This event not only celebrated creativity but also gathered people from the community, fostering a shared recognition of beauty in a place overshadowed by despair.
But the mission doesn't stop at visual arts. With practicality in mind, Horizons International offers graphic design classes as well, equipping students with skills that can be woven into their daily lives. In a different realm of creativity, music is being harmonized into hope through courses in music theory and instrument instruction, aimed at cultivating worship leaders for local churches. One particular class experience boasted participation from 70 eager musicians learning guitar, piano, and drums—individuals ready to step into roles that will guide their communities in worship.
Houssney's optimism about these programs stems from the way social media can elevate their impact. He noted, “Beautiful videos that contain scripture messages alongside visual art tend to get higher viewership. When posts like that get more views, they can potentially bring more people to Christ.” It’s a remarkable marriage of art and technology, where the beauty of creation can be harnessed to spread the Gospel's message further than traditional methods ever could.
Yet, these vibrant programs face significant challenges. With resources being spread thin, Horizons International balances the immediate need for humanitarian aid—providing food and medicine—with their creative initiatives that glorify God through the arts. Houssney appeals for prayer for the resources necessary to sustain these programs, envisioning canvases, studio spaces, and skilled instructors, all essential for continuing this vital work.
As the world watches Lebanon navigate its stormy seas, Houssney doesn’t ask for less hardship or fewer political crises. Instead, he prays that through the adversity, people's hearts remain open to the Gospel, allowing God’s glory to shine through their darkness. “I’m praying for God to open more and more hearts to the Gospel,” he said, reflecting on the resilient faith of the Lebanese people. “That’s what matters.”
In seeking beauty amidst crisis, Horizons International embodies a transformative spirit, believing that every person has a story worth sharing and a voice worth nurturing. As the aroma of hope begins to waft through the scars of Lebanon, one can't help but ponder how this beautiful music of resilience will echo not only through the streets of Beirut but around the world. The journey isn't over—it's just beginning.
