The project, aptly named "Jovem Atleta" (Young Athlete), is woven into the fabric of these communities by the Brazilian Methodist Church, often referred to as the IBADE (Igrejas Batistas Avulsas da Diocese Evangélica). Since its inception in 2021, this initiative actively promotes sports as a tool for social transformation, infusing the everyday lives of these youths with purpose and direction. The locations span across nearly 20 municipalities, encompassing areas such as Pernambuco, Bahia, and Paraíba.
Pastor André Cruz, who spearheads this endeavor, reflects on its impact, saying, “We are not just creating soccer players; we are developing leaders.” Many of these young athletes come from impoverished backgrounds, faced with limited opportunities and exposure to societal challenges like violence and poor education. Yet, under the guidance of this project, they are engaging in more than just sports; they are learning life skills, teamwork, and the value of perseverance.
On one level, the structure of the program allows participants to embrace athleticism, but it also integrates vital educational components. Trainings include character-building sessions that teach discipline, respect, and resilience—qualities that serve them both on and off the field.
