On that Saturday, November 4, 2023, the space was buzzing with anticipation, as people were preparing for an extraordinary event aimed at one of the most underrepresented communities in the church—those who are deaf.
"Mobilizar surdos para a Grande Comissão" was more than just a meeting; it was a powerful call to action designed to engage the deaf community in a mission that spans the globe. This event aligns with Christ's Great Commission: to spread His message of love and salvation to all nations (Matthew 28:19). But this gathering aimed not only to share the message, but also to empower those who might feel left behind in the conversation.
Among the attendees was Ana, a 25-year-old deaf woman whose eyes sparkled with excitement as she signed her way through conversations with friends and fellow believers. “It's important for us to have a voice in the church,” Ana shared, her hands moving eloquently as she expressed the dreams of many. She hoped for a church that actively included deaf individuals, recognizing their unique gifts and calling in the Kingdom of God.
The event was organized by the “Igreja da Cidade” (City Church) in partnership with “Caminhada” (Walk), an organization dedicated to ensuring that deaf people can engage in faith-based initiatives. "At the core of our mission is the belief that everyone is called to share the Gospel," said Pastor Tiago Ribeiro, who had worked tirelessly with a team to bring this vision to life. “We want to ensure the deaf community knows that the Great Commission also applies to them.”
Workshops, discussions, and teachings were at the heart of the day, with interpreters facilitating communication so that every participant felt included and understood. The tone was set from the start as worship broke out, with songs being beautifully interpreted in Brazilian Sign Language. The sound of clapping echoed as deaf attendees joined in vibrant celebration, showing that worship transcends spoken words.
In attendance were approximately 500 people, all gathered for the same purpose: to ignite a passion for sharing their faith in ways that resonate within their communities. Yet what made this gathering particularly powerful was the realization that the Great Commission was not just an abstract concept, but a personal invitation extended to each individual in the room, regardless of their ability to hear.
“Look at the mission field that is before us,” called out Raquel, an inspiring figure within the deaf community who has dedicated her life to advocating for inclusion in church settings. “We cannot just wait for others to come to us; we need to go out and share the message of Jesus.”
As the day wrapped up, attendees were not just equipped with tools and resources, but also a deep sense of belonging. They left with a renewed purpose, knowing that their voices—whether spoken or signed—are integral to the fabric of the body of Christ.
